President James Conant, Detective Inspector Walter Thompson and Churchill at Harvard, 6 September 1943. Instead of Harvard’s austere robes, Conant wanted WSC to wear the robes of Oxford, where he held a previous honorary degree. A hasty search found a set at Princeton, which loaned them for the occasion. (Imperial War Museum, public domain)
