As a physician, I am aware that the science of medicine is the worst form of learning about health. disease and treatment—except for all the others. This is what the Nobel Prize-winning physician, Paul Ehrlich tried to educate the public shortly after 1910 about the incremental advancement of knowledge and science, how it was always open to question and always evolving. Those who seek a shortcut, a “one size fits all” are those likely to set up authoritarian regimes that wind up causing massive destruction. As in Medicine, Sarah Bakewell demonstrates in her brilliant book, Humanly Possible, how secular humanism proceeds slowly over centuries to make progress in knowledge, truth and human relationships, but never “one size fits all.”

The rulers are not taking an interest in this because they want the majority to be ignorant or downtrodden, as here in India. Like that of communism, the leaders never help the common man become civically conscious.

(That’s Russell’s own view, not Aristotle’s.)

Democracy leads ultimately to tyranny as we’re witnessing occurring before our eyes today. But to fight that urge of the ignorant to demand and defend it is the duty of the free peoples everywhere. The Constitutional Republic must not be allowed so to die at the hands of the ignorant. This is the fight worthy of all.
